Comparing Music Videos

I will today be looking at two music videos, with completely different styles so i can explain the techniques behind then and how each of the music videos has helped enhance the tone of the song that the music video was created for.

Gravity By Zlata Ognevich

For my first video i will be looking at the music video for ‘Gravity’ by Zlata Ognevich, the music video starts off with her waking up in a metal rose in the sky and goes on to show her walking around a mystical forest where she see’s unicorns and butterflies and other mystical creatures. The video switches from her walking around the forest and her singing in front of a screen. The use of effects in this video is pretty spectacular as the video uses a lot of cgi and animation, for example when she wakes up in the metal rose you know it is Cgi, but the way they have actually used it to make it look like she is in a metal rose in the sky is just amazing.

Another good use of the Cgi is when she is laid out in a bubble floating about with diamonds next to her really look breath taking, also the scene really fits in well with the tone of the song, which is about her being free and she will do what she wants and that she has no fear. One example that helps show how the music is enhanced by the video is at 2:07 when she sings the line “I’m like a butterfly” and it goes to a shot of a blue butterfly flying around freely, which matches the tone of the song extremely well.

Another thing i really like about the music video is when it shows the shots of her just singing in front a screen, it’s not just her singing in front a screen there is some lighting effects which really in keep with the tone of the song, as in that the lights are brightly colour, which shows the songs has a really happy feel to it.

I believe the video also has been edited to fit in well to fit with the pace of the song, for example from 2:34 to 2:45 the video goes into a bit of a slow motion effect to keep in with the slow pace of the music and then kicks back into a normal pace again at 2:46 when the music becomes a tad more upbeat.

Hanna Pakarinen – Leave Me Alone

The second music video i have choose to evaluate is ‘Leave Me Alone’ by Hanna Pakarinen, the music video is about a woman dates a guy, who is also dating another man and it goes on to show how he is just using the first woman and that he never really loved her.

There are no animations or cgi used in this video, however the video uses a range of mild and dark tones to keep in with the rock and dark theme of the song itself and uses a few quick and shaky shots during the chorus part of the song, which help express the anger of the song and that help you connect with the song more.

I liked the way that in the video they switch between footage of her singing with a band and the main video sequence, where she is with a guy and his girlfriend because it helps give the viewers more of a connection to the video. The shots are very quickly cut so it can keep in with the angry pace of the song, which i think is great because it really does help you connect with how the singer is feeling during the song.

Music Video Idea

The idea behind the music i plan to do does use some of the effects used in the two videos i have described, for example i plan to use a dark colour effect, to show the emotion of the song in the video and i also plan to use a mix between scenes of a person performing the song and also having a storyline scene where she stalks a girl who she thinks is sleeping with her boyfriend and in the end finds out that she is actually sleeping with him and during a fight accidently kills her.

The reason behind the idea for the video is, because the song is about a woman telling other women to stay away from her man and that she wants him all to herself and she will make sure it stays that way.

I also plan on using a wide range of slow cuts between shots and possibly fades, do it fits in well with the pace of the melody of the song.

Purposes Of The Music Video

In recent years music videos have become more popular in the music industry with almost ever artist releasing a video for new songs that they release, so with music videos becoming more popular the format of the videos are quickly changing with new styles and techniques being brought in all the time. So i today i will be explain to you the reason behind music videos.

To start of with i will be explaining one of the main reasons behind music videos and that is promotion. Artists will record music videos to help promote their songs and gain more attention from the public so their music can be shown to a wider audience. Music videos can also gain a lot of positive and negative attention, which can both be a great thing for the artist who released it, for example when Robin Thicke released one of the videos (The clean version is featured below) for the song ‘Blurred Lines’ it was heavily criticised for featuring nude models and was taken down of YouTube, however the video returned back to YouTube not long after, but this time with an age limit. But even with the criticism of the video and lyrics of the song, it managed to become one of the biggest selling singles on that year.

Now of course everyone knows that making a music video can cost a lot of money and sometimes the videos might not even get a lot of views, so one of the ways artists save money on creating music videos is by using product placement, which means companies will pay the artist or managers money to place their product in the singers music video, which could get viewers who watch the music video to buy that certain products. For example in Cher Lloyds ‘Oath’ music video we easily see her sat in a class room wearing a pair of X Sony MDR-X10 Headphones.

Another way singers can save money and get their music videos more noticed is synergy, which means when a singer writes a song for a movie or TV show they can help promote their music and the film/ TV show by using clips from the film/ TV show in their music video which helps get both the singer and movie or TV show more noticed. For example Alexander Rybak wrote a song called ‘Into A Fantasy’ for the film How To Train Your Dragon 2 and in the music video for the song there are clips and products from the movie in the video.

When making a music video who do you make it for? The viewers of course, But what is a music video if it has no one to watch it? The key thing about making a music video is getting it noticed and now a days with the internet and TV it is easier for a video to get noticed, just by posting them on such popular websites as YouTube or Vevo (Which can also help the singers and managers make money if they are a YouTube partner and gain loads of views on their videos) and by doing that there is a greater chance of the video being seen by a larger amount of people. A great example for this is Rebecca Blacks ‘Friday’, which only got around 3000 views in the first month, however after the video was featured on a blog it received 11,000 more views and two days later it was up to around two million views. Another way singers promote their music video is by getting them played on TV channels, such as 4Music and MTV, which can also help promote music videos and help them become more popular.
